2012 IS A PERFECT TIME FOR THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND

Romans 12: 2 – And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Well here we are in a brand new year, but hearing and seeing the same old things.  The age old adage, “same stuff different day,” is certainly appropriate to describe the state of this world in most recent years.   The travesties that are taking place in this world today give the impression that society has truly lost its mind and completely turned away from the way and the will of God.

One arena where this is particularly true is politics.  Unfortunately, it is election time, and once again we will be inundated with political jargon and rhetoric, devised to sway our opinions and our votes to serve a particular parties interest.  In a story that aired on CNN, Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum singled out a specific group (race) as primary recipients of welfare.  He stated, “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money.  I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families.”

Needless to say, he is under great scrutiny for this grossly inaccurate remark, but is it really that surprising?  I don’t think so.  This statement along with many others that we will undoubtedly hear during this grueling election process is only power for the course.

Racism is alive and well.  While many racists had learned to be very subtle about it, and became the masters of disguise, the election of the first African American President changed all of that. Now they wear racism like a badge of honor and try to convince us that this is not what we are looking at when we watch them try to tear down, vote against, and railroad everything President Obama attempts to accomplish.  To think that the decision makers would be more engrossed in rallying against one person even if it means crippling a country is unfathomable to me.   When President Obama was elected the eternal optimists of this world (I being one of them held out hope that race relations were improving.  I think that I can safely speak for many of us when I say that what we are witnessing is “same stuff different day.”

In yet another troubling example of the world gone mad, I would like to bring your attention to Detroit Michigan.  Personal reasons have made it necessary for me to return to my birthplace.  With that, I try to keep abreast of what is going on in and around the city.  While Detroit is still a great place for entertainment (if you can get there safely) there is not much else to report  Not only has the city been voted the second saddest city in America, but the murder rate in Motown is up 12% from 2010.  In 2011 there were 337 “reported” murders in the city.

This blatant disregard for human life is certainly a sign of the times, as Detroit has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.  Oh, and did I mention that the local government is corrupt (and former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is long gone) many of them are “in bed” with others who stand to benefit from keeping the citizens poor while they get richer.  It is so bad that even the campaign promises that we once tried to believe do not even sound convincing.  Instead it is painfully obvious that the order of the day is “every man for himself and God for us all.”

Detroit is not the only city suffering from the absence of human decency in our actions.  Many people across this country feel desperate and destitute.  Ever heard of the saying  “strange for a little change?” This is what is happening in this great land that we live in and as a result crimes such as robbery, armed robbery, carjacking, and assault are also on the rise.

What are we to do?  Who are we to trust when everything that we have come to believe as right and good has crumbled around us?  I charge you to renew your mind.  In an ever changing world the only thing that we can “take to the bank” is that we serve a consistent and unchanging God.  In the wake of all that plagues us as a society and as Christians, this is good news. Be not conformed to this world because it shall pass away.  Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Replace that trust that you have in politicians, police and employers and other worldly entities with unwavering trust in God, and then be about your Father’s business.

Perhaps the problem is that God’s people have become passive and we need to begin to let our lights shine so that others may see the wondrous works Jesus Christ through us. Find your joy in Jesus Christ and spread it abroad. If negativity can spread and influence the actions of people, how much more can the example of God’s love, and truth as demonstrated by his saints?  Let us first begin with the renewing of “our” mind, 2012 is a perfect time.
